Man of sin
on
Temple Mount

"His armed forces will…desecrate the temple…abolish the daily Sacrifice…set up the abomination that causes desolation"
— Dan. 11:31-32 NIV
The Romans crucified the final sacrifice, the Lamb of God
who identified their armies as "the abomination that causes desolation"—Matt. 24:15, Mark13:14, compare Luke 21:20
Since the Roman empire's collapse
radical Islam has ruled the Middle East,
repudiating the gods of their fathers.—Daniel 11:36-39
Radical Islam set itself up on the "holy mountain" (Temple Mount)…Daniel 11:45
This "man of lawlessness…opposes and exalts himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, and even sets himself up in God's temple"—2 Thess. 2:3-4 NIV

God's angel gives Daniel prophetic information about future events from the standpoint of "your people" (Dan. 9:24, 11:14, 12:1), the Jews. Distant wars and world powers such as China, Japan are omitted, while those that impact Jerusalem are detailed.

A succession of superpowers wear the mantle of the "king of the north" and the "king of the south." After the Persians and the Greeks come the Romans, who rule the Middle East for centuries. Jesus identifies the Roman armies that destroy Jerusalem's Temple with "'the abomination that causes desolation' spoken of through the prophet Daniel." (Matthew 24:15 in the light of Luke 21:20)

After the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire, radical Islam rules the Middle East for well over a thousand years, fulfilling the role of the "king of the north" who has "no regard" for "women" or for "the gods of his fathers." (Dan. 11:37)

In chapter 12, Daniel again sees a glimpse of the end times, when the unprecedented Tribulation on the Jewish people climaxes in the Holocaust, but God begins to move for their deliverance.

Daniel 11:31-12:1

31And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary [Roman armies destroyed the Temple sanctuary in 70 A.D.] of strength, and shall take away the daily [sacrifice][Messiah's sacrificial death as the Lamb of God obviated the need for further animal sacrifices.], and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate. [ = the Roman armies; compare Matt. 24:15, Mark13:14, and Luke 21:20.]

32 And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do [exploits].

33 And they that understand among the people shall instruct many [ = Messiah's disciples taught many Jews and Gentiles;]: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity [ = The Romans took the Jews into captivity and scattered them worldwide.;], and by spoil, [many] days.

34 Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries.

35 And [some] of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make [them] white, [even] to the time of the end: because [it is] yet for a time appointed.

36 And the king [ = now the radical Islamic empire, after the Eastern Roman Empire collapsed;]shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.

37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.

38 But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
39 Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge [and] increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.

40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. [The Islamic empire swept into Europe and took over much of Spain, the Baltics, even Austria. Europe pushed back, too, in the Crusades, and later in the First World War.]

41 He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many [countries] shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, [even] Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon. [Britain defeated the Islamic Ottoman Empire in World War I, seizing the land that is now Israel and Jordan.]

42 He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape. [Egypt continues under Islamic control.]

43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians [shall be] at his steps. [Islam has penetrated deep into northern Africa.]

44 But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many.

45 And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain [ = Temple Mount where the Dome of the Rock was built shortly after the Islamic conquest.]; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.

12:1And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble [ = the great Tribulation on the Jewish people, climaxing in the Holocaust. See discussion: 1260 Days — The Holocaust in Scripture.], such as never was since there was a nation [even] to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

"the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He opposes and exalts himself over everything that is called God or is worshipped, and even sets himself up in God's temple"—2 Thess. 2:3-4 NIV
